His arrival was what Accra had been eagerly awaiting for on Tuesday as the travelling Chelsea team touched down but finally, Ghana’s own, Michael Essien has breezed into town.

Essien arrived late on a day after the Jose Mourinho had led a delegation Stamford Bridge team to take part in their first major initiative in the six-year partnership announced in January between the English premiership side and the Canadian NGO Right To Play in Africa.

The Ghanaian international joined the rest of the team on the second-leg of their humanitarian mission that has seen them travel up north to Tamale.

Essien, an ambassador for Right to Play, who missed out of the coaching sessions at the El-Wak stadium on Wednesday, made available his services on to talents in the Tamale metropolis on Thursday.

The first day of work saw eighty-five young Ghanaians had come from three different sources - half were boys of Under-17 from C.K Gyamfi Sports College, half were girls of Under-15 from two clubs, Ideal Ladies FC and Greater Accra Ladies Select side.

The work was based on standard Academy routines - mixing those aimed at perfecting basic technique in younger players.

Local Right To Play football coaches from organisations including the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Red Cross Society, Ghana Girl Guides Association, Street Academy, Catholic Action for Street Children and the Urban Poor Child Organisation also learnt from the coaching and demonstrating the routines.

Chelsea and their global charity partners, Right To Play aims to highlight the importance of sports in promoting development, peace and health.
