MTN pays up first tranche for FA Cup

The Ghana Football Association today received a financial boost towards the organization of the MTN FA Cup with the competition's sponsor paying a cheque of GH¢450,000 to the sport body.

The first season of the competition is worth GH¢1 million of which GH¢900,000 would be in cash with products of the sponsor taking up the remaining sum.

MTN, a telecommunication company also provided its products worth GH¢50,000 at the ceremony in Accra, thus representing 50% of the sponsorship package for the first season of the competition.

According to the sponsor, the rest of the payments would be done in tranches with the full package expected by the semi-final stage of the FA Cup.

The day also witnessed the introduction of the FA Cup Committee.

Former Ghana Football Association Chairman, Lepowura M.N.D Jawula heads the seven member committee mandated with the organization the re-introduced FA Cup.

The committee includes Albert Commey, Kwame Baah Nuako, Francis Doku, Kofi Manu, Jamil Maraby and Kurt Okraku.

The FA early this month signed on MTN as the headline sponsor for the competition for the next three football seasons worth GH¢3 million.

112 clubs would be involved in the first edition set to start in December 2010 with 96 clubs made of 48 each from the Division One and Division Two Leagues commencing in the preliminary round.

Premiership sides who would be all seeded would join in at the round of 32 stage.

The FA Cup by its tradition always involves clubs from all tiers of the Ghana league system playing against each other for the ultimate trophy.

The knockout competition would record a total of 111 games from the preliminary stages to the final match.

Asante Kotoko won the last competition in 2001 after beating city-rivals King Faisal in the competition which started in 1958.
