Queens pull 3-1 win

The senior women’s side, the Black Queens on Sunday kicked off their Beijing 2008 Olympics Games qualifying campaign on a winning note with a 3-1 away win over Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

Ghana, one of the four nations left in the last round of the qualifying campaign which is a played on a round-robin basis started the day’s scoring in the 10th minute through captain Adwoa Bayor before their host drew level from a seemingly offside position.

The first half scores stayed at 1-1. But back from recess the Ghana bench effected three changes and two of the new entrants fetched the two other goals for the Black Queens.

Gloria Foriwaa who came on for Doreen Awuah put Ghana in the lead again when she scored the second goal.

Memuna Darko, who also came off the bench for Safia Rahman scored the third goal making it 3-1 for Ghana.

Ghana is placed second on the standings of the four-team group table which also includes Nigeria and South Africa, after the Super Falcons beat the Bayana Bayana 5-0 at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday in the other group game.

The Black Queens would be at home for the next match against rivals, Nigeria, on August 12 at the El-Wak stadium in the capital, Accra.

Africa has a single Olympic Games ticket in the women’s football competition as the top placed team at the end of the qualifying rounds secures the automatic spot for next year’s Beijing Games with the second placed team engaging Brazil in the play-off.

Ghana are seeking to make her debut in the women’s football competition at next year’s Olympic Games.
