Ghana off to an exciting start in Wafu Cup

Ghana jumped into the lead in Group A of the GoTV Wafu Cup competition on the opening day after cruising to a 4-1 win against ten-man Sierra Leone on Thursday.

The home-based national team came from a goal down to secure victory at the Baba Yara Stadium as the eight-team competition reserved for only home-based players of member nations got underway.

After their exciting start, Ghana's home-based national team will be back in action on Saturday when they play Benin.

The Lone Stars made an Impressive start to the game as they drew first blood after 10 minutes when Kwane Quee, after wriggling his way past a host of defenders saw his first-time effort blocked by goalkeeper Foli Adade but was on hand to bury in the rebound.

Ghana drew level 15 minutes later through Michael Akuffo who directed his shot from outside the box into the top corner.

Both sides finished the opening half 1-1 apiece.

Ghana came back from recess stronger and three minutes into the start of the game, Theophilus Annorbah slotted home to put them in the lead.

There were two more goals to come for Ghana as Latif Mohammed and substitute striker Sulley Mohammed found target into the 51st and 70th minutes.

Sierra Leone saw red when defender Fofanah was sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence.

In the other group fixture, Benin drew 2-2 with Burkina Faso.

The competition continues on Friday for teams in Group B, where defending champions Togo will face Niger in the first game with Senegal meeting Gabon in the second match.
