Two national sides, the Black Princesses and the Black Meteors will vie for honours in football when the 9th All African Games kicks start on Monday.

For the second time in succession, both sexes will be competing in the football event at the quadrennial after the Women’s edition was introduced the last edition in 2003 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Games, which represents Africa’s version of the Olympic Games draws lots of countries to participate in a host of sporting events is been hosted by Algeria for the second time after 1978.

And among Ghana’s large contingent seeking national honours are the two football teams, the Black Princesses and the Black Meteors.

Ghana will line up for action on the opening day of the Games in the women’s football competition where Ghana is making her debut.

The Black Princesses will attempt to kick off on a good note when they play against host nation, Algeria in Zeralda on Monday.

Ghana and Senegal are appearing for the first time in the Women’s edition which was debuted at the 8th All Africa Games in Abuja in 2003.

Black Princesses coach, Mumuni Gamel remains upbeat about the team’s chances on their debut.

The male Olympic team, the Black Meteors will take on defending African champions, Cameroon in the Group A opener at the Boumerdes on Tuesday.

Cameroon have won gold in the last two editions of the Games but will be up for stiff competition in Group A which includes Ghana, two-times bronze medallist, South Africa and Tunisia.

Ghana coach, Cecil Jones Attuquayefio would be counting on the experience of the two overage players in his squad, Francis Bossman and the premiership’s best player, Kweku Essien to drive on the team to success.

The tournament regulations allows for the inclusion of three senior players above the age 23.

Aside the presence of the senior members in the squad dominated largely by local talent, Cecil Jones Attuquayefio also has Prince Tagoe lead Ghana’s attack.

The other Group A game is between Tunisia and South Africa.
