Winning the passionate fans back has really excited players of the Black Stars in the on-going 2008 African Cup of Nations as they call for more support for the game against Nigeria on Sunday.

Ghana, hosts of the tournament recorded three wins in the group stages of the competition but the team’s misses in front of goal in the second match which they won 1-0 over Namibia, upset some fans.

However, the uneasy times were wiped away by a blistering start to the game against Morocco which Ghana won 2-0 to qualify to the last eight. Right from the start of that game, the fans revived their support for the Black Stars and cheered them on throughout the entertaining 90 minutes match.

And that support hasn’t stopped in the run up to Sunday’s first quarter-final game at the Ohene Djan Stadium. Players of the team are demanding exactly that kind of support against the Nigerians.

"We need supporters to get behind the team," says Quincy Owusu Abeyie.

“We are happy that we’ve got the fans back. They want us to do more but we’ve promised them that we would make it. We are going to make them happy,” Ghana defender, John Paintsil said after the game against Morocco.

Michael Essien is demanding the support from the fans for the challenges ahead.

“All we are doing is to do our best for the country so they (fans) should forget about the past and stay behind us, keep praying and supporting us and hopefully we can actually win something for the nation,” Essien added.

After overcoming the pressure in the group stages, Junior Agogo says the team is getting better.

"There was a bit of pressure before this game, but now we're buzzing to be through.

"We hadn't played our best in our last two games, but we thought things would eventually come right for us."
