The great comeback by the 10-man Ghana team that eliminated Nigeria in the quarter-final stage of the 2008 African Cup of Nations has received lots of commendation.

And the latest to send through his appreciation is the number one fan of the team, President J.A. Kufour, who sat through the gruelling match at the stadium as he watched the game from the VIP arena.

The Ghanaian President, himself a football fan and a former football administrator has congratulated the team for their hard fought win on Sunday that secured them a place in the semi-final of the tournament, their first in 12 years.

Ghana rallied back from a goal down to draw level through Michael Essien before wrapping up the game against Nigeria from a Junior Agogo winner even while playing with ten players for a greater part of the second half.

A statement from the office of the President said the leader was happy with the team’s sheer determination to battle on for a win.

"Even with numerical disadvantage, they maintained their composure and dominated the game with superior tactical play that ensured victory was beyond doubt though it was a hard won success story," President Kufour’s message said.

The message said the continuous victory of the Black Stars has invigorated the spirit of the nation, with unparallel display of patriotism, great show of sportsmanship and the 'can do it' attitude, necessary for the success of the nation.

"As you rededicate yourselves to 'the host and win' mission, prepare yourselves for the battle ahead and be assured of the total support of my government and the country".
