Former Ghana captain reveals hurt over 'broken' he

A day after he was shown the exit from Accra Hearts of Oak, C.K. Akonnor spoke publicly on Thursday over his shock dismissal by the Accra side.

Three consecutive losses after a draw and a win in the five-week old Glo Premier League was enough to force his bosses hand to call time on his career with the Phobians late on Wednesday.

Getting the sack after 22 days of work since Hearts of Oak kicked off the campaign on October 10 was one that Akonnor says he never saw coming.

For Akonnor, who was on his second Premier League job after his time at Eleven Wise, he accepts that such decisions are part and parcel of the job.

“But this is the nature of our trade; today you are here, tomorrow you are gone,” a frustrated Akonnor told the GNA Sports.

However, there is one thing that seems to rile the former Ghana captain. The dent on his young career.

“Obviously, I feel very bad because I didn’t see this coming. It is very bad for my career because I wanted to achieve something special here,” he said.

The 38-year-old coach who much was expected from in his first full season with the Phobians after joining midstream two seasons ago explains that he is not to be blamed for the poor run.

“I thought we will play Real Tamale United and I will seek to turn things around. Suddenly, see what has happened. I have been surprised indeed.

“This is too bad because am not the problem. Only time will tell. Soon we will all know if I was the problem or not, which I so well know I wasn’t. It was always difficult without the needed support.”

The environment and the stature of club he was managing appears to have been lost on Akonnor.

He surprisingly says a side that he led to third last season was a work in progress after a string of poor pre-season results even though he was the man in charge.

“Hearts was a work in progress. We were working very hard and gradually, we had moved from the team none respected when the preseason began when we were losing and playing poorly to a team that was gradually gaining respect.

“Drawing the first game and beating Edubiase convincingly in the second, I naturally expected support and encouragement. But all I got was negative vibes and that surprised me. Suddenly, the team slammed again and that was shocking.”

The gauntlet has been thrown down to the Hearts of Oak team; and thrown down by Akonnor himself.
