Essien named in FIFA shortlist

Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is one of 23 players nominated by world football governing body FIFA for the 2009 World Player of the Year.

Essien, who plays for Chelsea is among a host of players vying for the honour with Argentina’s Lionel Messi the early favourite.

Essien is joined by two other African big names on the short list. They are Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o.

Voting for the award will be carried out by the captain and head coach of each national team, and the shortlist will be whittled down to five players at the start of December, before the final ceremony in Zurich.
