Ghana has been enjoying a champion’s status in the women's game on the continent but the Black Queens are still chasing a first African Women’s Championship title.

Their best performance in the competition which enters its 7th edition in South Africa 2010 has been three-time losing finalist.

For the 12 years since the competition started - 1998 -, Ghana has seen the title elude them continuously but Black Queens coach A.K Edusei believes his side has the pedigree to lift their first title.

As the Black Queens neared the final days of their 10-day training tour of Germany, the team coach told the GNA that he possess a strong side to compete for the continental title.

“The team is strong and these players are plying some good football. We also have history and reputation and we will push harder for the ultimate,” A.K Edusei said at the team's base in Hanover.

Amid the hype that surrounds their chances ahead of every competition, Ghana's last show at the Women’s Championship clearly did not follow script as the Black Queens exited at the group stage in Equatorial Guinea.

But for Edusei, Ghana cannot be simply written off due to their past failings.

“On the basis of where we are coming from in terms of the last competition, it is natural to ask questions about our chances but Equatorial Guinea did it at her second attempt, why not Ghana,” he said.

The Black Queens will play their opening game at the Championship against Algeria.

Ghana has been drawn in Group B and will also play against defending champions Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon.

The Black Queens' second group game would be against Cameroon ahead of the final clash in Group B with Equatorial Guinea.
