After competing in his first major tournament for Ghana, Andre Ayew is hoping to get better in future games for both club and country.

Andre Ayew might have enjoyed a limited playing time at the 2008 African Cup of Nations but the Ghanaian youngster believes the tournament has boosted his confidence.

The Olympique Marseille midfielder, son of former Ghana captain, Abedi Ayew Pele told KickOffGhana that he hopes to have established his own identity distinct from his dad.

“I am leaving this tournament a more confident person than I came in. I have gained a lot by being here and getting the opportunity to play so hopefully that should help for the future,” he said.

Though been restricted to substitute appearances from the bench for Ghana, Ayew had the opportunity to make a rare start in the semi-final loss to Cameroon and he rates his contribution as good.

“To have been told 15 minutes before a semi-final game that I am starting and to have played the way I did is wonderful. I am Ghanaian and hope that I will continuously get call ups to the national team. I have enjoyed it at the Nation’s Cup and want it to continue.”

At 18 and still learning to cope with the big game situations, Andre Ayew has had to deal with criticisms for his style of play in his first major tournament but says he will work to correct.

“I came here young to learn so I will deal with those things as time goes on. At 18 years, this is already one of the high points of my career. I will return to my club Olympic Marseille in better spirits and ready for the next step.”
