Ghana forward Jerry Afriyie has rejoined the Black Satellites camp in Egypt ahead of the team’s highly anticipated quarter-final clash against hosts Egypt at the ongoing TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025.

Afriyie had temporarily departed the Ghana camp on Tuesday to honour club duties with his Spanish side, CD Lugo, in a scheduled league fixture—an arrangement agreed upon between the Ghana Football Association and the club prior to the start of the tournament. Following his appearance for CD Lugo, the young striker has now returned and is available for selection in what is arguably Ghana’s most important match yet.

The 19-year-old attacker featured in two of Ghana’s group stage matches—making a substitute appearance in the opening fixture and playing the full 90 minutes in the hard-fought second game against Senegal. His energy, movement, and attacking instinct have been valuable assets to Coach Desmond Ofei’s side.

The team has expressed gratitude to CD Lugo for their cooperation in releasing the player in time for the decisive quarter-final, scheduled for Monday, May 12, at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT) at the new Suez Stadium. The stakes are high: a win not only secures a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament but also guarantees qualification to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Coach Desmond Ofei welcomed Afriyie’s return warmly, saying, “Jerry is a key part of our attacking setup. We understand the importance of his club commitments, and we’re thankful to CD Lugo for their understanding and collaboration. His return gives us a boost at just the right time.”

Afriyie himself has expressed excitement to be back with his teammates and is focused on helping Ghana reach the next stage. “It feels good to be back. The job isn’t done, and we all know what this next game means to us, to our fans, and to our country.”

All eyes will be on the Black Satellites on Monday as they seek to extend their run and secure a place on the world stage once again.
