Ghana strolled to a comfortable win in their opening group game as they kick start their campaign for a third title at the African U-17 Championships.

The Black Starlets beat the Young Stallions of Burkina Faso in Kegue on Sunday in Group B with goals from Ransford Osei and Ishmael Yartey who grabbed a brace on the day.

Five minutes into the opening half and striker, Ransford Osei put Ghana in the lead from a freekick just outside the area of the Burkinabes.

Ransford Osei curled the ball into the upright at the far post to become Ghana’s first goalscorer in the 7th edition of the African U-17 Championship.

In the 28th minute, Ishmael Yartey volleyed home the second for Ghana after a mix up by the opposing defence.

Ghana held onto the 2-0 lead to end the half.

Back from recess, Ishmael Yartey secured a brace when he rounded up the goalkeeper for the Young Stallions to slot in the third goal for Ghana after 54 minutes.

Ten minutes later, Burkina Faso got a consolation through Moussa Traore as the game headed for the closing stages.

The win sends Ghana top of the standings in Group B ahead of the second group fixture involving Nigeria and Eritrea.

Ghana, who silver medallist in the last edition of the competition are seeking a third title would line up three days later against Eritrea on March 14.

The eight-team tournament kicked off on Saturday with host, Togo beating South Africa 2-0 in Group A while the second group game between Gabon and Tunisia ended 0-0.

All four semi-finalists of the competition will go through to the FIFA Under-17 tournament that will be held in South Korea this summer.
