The playing members of the Black Stars at the 2008 African Nations Cup would pick up a total cash bonus of GH ¢10,000 for their scoring run, qualification and a third-place finish at the tournament.

The bonus comes from local insurance brokers, Glico, who made a promise before the start of the Nations Cup to reward the Black Stars for every winning goal scored and their progress at the tournament.

Kwaku Forku-Kyei, an Executive Director of the insurance firm presenting the cheque to honour their promises says the move was part of the company’s contribution to the development of the game.

“We consider this move to offer our support to the game. Glico assures the Ghana Football Association that, we would be a big partner to the ‘Agenda 2010’. We would be there with you (FA),” the Glico executive said.

Goals scored in the group stages of the tournament secured the Black Stars GH ¢2,000 while qualification to the quarter-finals brought the team GH ¢1,000. Ghana beat Guinea, Namibia and Morocco in the first round of the tournament.

The 2-1 win over Nigeria at the quarter-finals swelled the bonuses to by GH ¢1,200.

Ghana’s semi-final performance earned the Black Stars GH ¢2,000 before the winning of the third-place match handed the team a GH ¢3,000.

The bonuses was further topped up by GH ¢ 800 from the CEO of Glico to make it a total of GH ¢10,000 for Ghana’s impressive showing at the Nations Cup.
