Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has warned Sulley Muntari to watch his step or he will miss much of the Premier League season through suspension.

The 22-year-old Ghana midfielder was sent off in Wednesday's Premier League match with Manchester United.

And Redknapp is worried his club record signing's dismissal could signal a nervous time ahead.

Redknapp admitted: "Muntari is stretching into challenges and has got to watch it."

"The first foul was an innocuous trip on Ronaldo but he should have been more careful with the second one.

"Referees in the Premier League will pick up on that and often they can't take account of over-enthusiasm.

"I think Sulley has a big future here but he has to be a bit more careful with his challenges."

Muntari saw red three times and collected eight yellow cards last season for Italian club Udinese who sold him to Pompey for a reported fee of US$14m last month.

He will miss Saturday's home clash against Bolton with a one-match ban after tripping Ronaldo early in the second half and then going in late on United's Michael Carrick.
