Milovan Rajevac says Ghana did not deserve to lose the quarter-final game against Uruguay Friday night in South Africa.

The Black Stars lost the tie 4-2 through the penalty shootout after the game had been locked 1-1 in normal regulation time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

The result which ends Africa’s dream of having a representative in the semi-finals of the World Cup as millions across the continent agonized Ghana‘s setback on a night that the Black Stars had victory within grasp.

“All I can say is this is football,” Rajevac said. “We didn’t deserve to lose in this way.”

“I think we had more opportunities than our opponents but that’s football. We really had good support and it would have been a fairytale but I would like to congratulate Uruguay. I’m very proud.

“The whole of Africa supported us. We didn’t deserve to lose this way. It’s difficult but we’re proud of what we achieved,” he added after Ghana became only the third African team to reach the quarter-finals following Cameroon and Senegal.

Ghana took the lead through a Sulley Muntari 30 yard strike just before the end of the first half but that was canceled out by a Diego Forlan through a freekick 10 minutes after recess.

The game stayed 1-1 from then and traveled into extra time with either side looking to jump into the lead.

Ghana’s efforts were rewarded as Olegario Benquerenca awarded the Black Stars a penalty when Suarez handled on the line to keep out a header by substitute Dominic Adiyiah and was shown a red card.

But Asamoah Gyan’s spot kick went off the bar as the game went to a shootout that went in favour of the South American side.
