Black Queens captain Florence Okoe insists that Ghana have the quality and personnel to challenge for the African Women Championship title.

Ghana came out successful in their pre-tournament matches, beating two second-tier female sides in Germany.

However, the task of following up with similar performances will be tested when the Black Queens play their opening game at the Championship in South Africa against Algeria on Tuesday.

Okoe says they are hoping to push for the title and admits that they are determined to improve game after game in a tough Group B which also includes Cameroon and reigning champions Equatorial Guinea.

“We have a task ahead of us and we can go to the Championship to deliver whatever we can. I think we have the qualities and the players that can face all this countries – opponents.

“We are not going to underrate any country. We would play match after match and improve match after match," the Black Queens captain said.

Ghana, three-time losing finalist in the Championship's 12-year history, failed to live up their billing two years ago when they exited the African Women Championship at the group stage in Equatorial Guinea.

For the team captain, the experience of the past would only seek to motivate them.

“In our last tournament, we didn’t perform well so this is our chance to lift the trophy for the first time. Most players now have the exposure so I think with this preparation, we can lift the trophy.”
