A handful of clubs believe they might be destined to play in the Premiership next season as the opening matches of the promotion league kicks off Sunday.

And any of the 12 competing sides who fail in their bid would have every reason to rue missing out of the chance to pick one of the three available slots to make up the 16 places in the lucrative elite division.

Having completed their league campaigns as the best sides in the Division One League, their form would once again be tested once again, this time over a six-day period when they engage each other in three groups of four each. The winners after three rounds of matches from every group makes it to the topflight league.

The pairings is a mixed bag of former elite players and pretenders all vying to play in the 2009/2010 Glo Premier League.

Certainly, a premiership debutant would emerge from Zone I which has Guan United, Universal Stars, Bechem United and Aduana Stars all jostling for qualification.

Guan, after a good season would open their campaign in Kumasi against Aduana Stars. The other game in the group would see Universal Stars take on Bechem FC at the Wesley College grounds.

In Zone II, former premiership side, Ebusua Dwarfs would have beat off competition from Tarkwa United, Gold Stars and New Edubiase to win their return.

With the Tarkwa community yearning for topflight football after 29 years, Tarkwa United would carry their hopes of achieving that dream when they start off from the Tema Park against Gold Stars.

Dwarfs, a side to have tasted elite football would try to force a return as they play New Edubiase in Accra.

However, Zone III presents a different picture. The group involves three former premiership clubs.

Great Olympics, Okwawu United and Real Sportive have all had stints in the premier league but they have Tudu Mighty Jets to contend with for the sole place.

The Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast would host the opening cracker between Real Sportive and Great Olympics while Mighty Jets battle Okwawu United at the Gyandu Park.
