On Thursday 23 August, the Cheonan Sports Complex plays host to Matchday 2 in Group F at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007.

The first fixture of the day is the eagerly-awaited clash between Ghana and Germany.

The Africans made a smooth start to the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago, but the Germans were forced to settle for a draw against Colombia after letting slip a two-goal lead, and are now hoping to make amends with a first victory at the event.

The game

Ghana v Germany, Cheonan, Thursday, 23. August, 17:00 (local time)

The stakes

Following their convincing victory over T&T, Ghana will be in confident mood ahead of the game. Another three points for the Black Starlets, previous winners of the tournament in 1991 and 1995, would see them safely through to the next round with a match to spare.

After their opening day draw, the German U-17s ideally require a win to keep them on course for a place in the last 16, and spare them a nail-biting final group encounter.

The players

Both teams will be at full strength, as neither is troubled by injury or suspension.

The past

Ghana and Germany meet for the first time at a FIFA U-17 World Cup. Back in 1993, the nations met twice at different levels: the senior Germany side defeated the Africans 6-1 in a friendly, with a 2-2 draw at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia.

The words

"The game between Germany and Colombia showed both teams are dangerous in front of goal. Germany are enormously strong, tactically and technically, and they move the ball at speed. We need to be cautious, and more than anything else, we need to concentrate. But we're well prepared and aiming to make the last sixteen" Sellas Tetteh Teivi, Ghana coach

"We know Ghana are a good footballing side, with dangerous wide players capable of causing a lot of problems down the flanks. But we're confident in our own abilities, and we've learned our lessons from the match against Colombia. We're aiming to win and take a giant stride towards the last sixteen." Heiko Herrlich, Germany coach.
