The 2006 African Cup of Nations was the first major tournament that Kwesi Nyantakyi oversaw as his reign as the President of the Ghana Football Association started.

The tournament hosted by Egypt, however saw Ghana, with a weakened side due to injuries exit in the first round drawing the backlash from fans.

However, five months later, the Black Stars who had secured a debut World Cup qualification made amends when they reached the round of 16 in Germany, being the only African side to get that far.

Two years on, Ghana are host of the 26th edition of the African Cup of Nations and the Black Stars are among a number of teams tipped to taste glory.

Now, the biggest legacy the FA President wants is a fifth Nations Cup title.

“It will be a lifetime achievement because since 1982, Ghana has not won the African Cup and we have had all kinds of players, some of them the greatest names on the continent and still didn’t manage it.

“The current players have done well for themselves and the nation, so it will be prestigious and an achievement for the players, coaches and officials that we win.

“Even coach Claude Le Roy who won with Cameroon is keen. It will be a morale booster and a big stepping stone as we move forward to begin another World Cup qualifying campaign,” the FA President told KickOffGhana in an interview.

A look at Ghana’s team qualities convinces Kwesi Nyantakyi that the Black Stars are capable of winning the competition.

“Take a critical look at our team. Review it player by player. We have good players who are competitive and can compare with any world class players. But more importantly, they are good individual players who have formed a really strong unit.

“There are little things that makes the difference between a team that wins and doesn’t. It includes motivation, good team spirit and, of course, the support.

“That is what we as a football association, are keen to work on. We want to make sure the players can focus on the job at hand which is to play football and then we take care of the other things.”
