Ashanti Region produced a strong second-half performance to rally from behind and claim a 3–1 victory over Volta Region in their opening Group B match at the ongoing MTN Elite U-19 Championship at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Volta Region made a bright start and took an early lead through captain Nathaniel Adanu, who struck in the 9th minute to give his side the advantage. Ashanti Region, however, regrouped after the break and equalized in the 47th minute to draw level.
Their persistence paid off late in the game when Julios Owusu confidently converted a penalty in the 86th minute to put Ashanti ahead. Substitute Sarfo King then sealed the win deep into stoppage time with a well-executed finish from a rehearsed training-ground move, completing a memorable comeback for the Ashanti boys.
The victory gives Ashanti Region a perfect start to their campaign and sets the tone for what promises to be a competitive and entertaining tournament.
In the other fixtures scheduled for the day, Northern Region will face Western Region in the second match, while Greater Accra take on Upper East later in the afternoon to wrap up the day’s activities at the Technical Centre.
The 11-day championship, which runs from October 23 to November 2, 2025, features ten Regional Football Association (RFA) U-19 teams from across the country. It serves as a vital platform for Ghana’s most promising young footballers to showcase their skills, gain valuable experience, and attract the attention of national youth team coaches and professional clubs.
Proudly sponsored by MTN Ghana, the Elite U-19 Championship is a flagship component of the GFA’s “Power to the Youth” initiative, which aims to unearth, nurture, and develop young football talent. Beyond competition, the tournament also seeks to instill key values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, as part of Ghana’s long-term vision to build a strong foundation for future football excellence.
