Ghana played some 30 minutes of the nerve racking quarter-final against Nigeria with ten men after captain, John Mensah was sent off. But the Black Stars never stopped shining, fighting back at the Ohene Djan Stadium to win 2-1 on Sunday.

And such is the performance that never leaves Claude Le Roy in doubt about his sides over ability to fight for victory.

“I did not need this game to have confidence in my team.

"It's a fantastic team; they are really heroes because to come back with ten players against a team like Nigeria. We deserved to win."

"They were heroes to first come back from a goal down, then hold on and get the winner.

"I'm so proud to be the Ghana coach, congratulations to them all," Claude Le Roy said of his Ghana team.

The 60th minute exit of John Mensah saw a reduced Ghana team rather carry the game to their opponents and succeeding in winning the game. However Le Roy says the gamble not to bring on a defender after his captain’s exit paid off.

"We took a risk not to change our formation and bring on a defender after Mensah had been sent off but we wanted to keep attacking. We wanted to win it," he said.

“If the game had gone for extra time, we could have lost this game. I just asked my players to reorganise.”

Looking back at the events that led to the red card, Le Roy says it was a quick decision from referee Benouza Mohamed.

"I don't know whether John deserved the red card. The referee was very fast to send him off. This case was not clear cut."

"But in football, you have to accept the decisions of the referee."
