Le Roy gets World XI call

Ghana coach, Claude Le Roy will lead a World Stars side full of illustrious names to play an African XI next month to celebrate the 89th birthday of Nelson Mandela.

The Black Stars manager has been confirmed by organizers as the coach to lead the World XI side for the game.

The game dubbed 90 Minutes for Mandela and organized by FIFA comes off on July 18 in Cape Town at the Newlands Stadium is been played in honour of the legendary South African statesman.

Le Roy would be having in his collection, best players in the world from the past and present who would test a selection of players from Africa, among them would be players that played in a similar game a decade ago.

On 17 August 1999, the Nelson Mandela African XI played a World All Stars XI in a farewell match for the outgoing president of South Africa.

Ghana’s Abedi Ayew Pele joined other stars like Kalusha Bwalya, Lucas Radebe, Dunga, Luis Hernandez and Claudio Suarez in saluting the great leader in front of 40,000 spectators in the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

Abedi is expected to win another call after having played in a similar game ten years ago.

The proceeds of the match will all be earmarked for legacy programmes reaching out to young people in South Africa by using football to develop educational, health and social programmes.

The exact activities will be decided and implemented in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

This would be the second time that FIFA is organizing an all-star match to honour Nelson Mandela.

Players selected for the game and match details is yet to be released by FIFA.
