Asante Kotoko have failed to make it to the next stage of the CAF/MTN Champions League after losing away on penalties to Gambian side, Port Authority in Banjul on Saturday.

The Porcupine Warriors lost 4-2 during the spot kicks after the Gambians had forced the game into penalties with a vital goal 14 minutes to the end of the game that canceled out Kotoko’s 1-0 lead from the first leg.

Kotoko held their opponents for a greater part of the game and appeared to be coasting to qualification from the first leg tie goal by defender, Dan Acquah through a spot kick.

However, Port Authority snatched the much needed equalizer after a misunderstanding between Kotoko goalkeeper Isaac Amoako and defender Dan Acquah allowed a Gambian player to slot the ball into the post.

And during the spot kicks, Michael Ofosu-Appiah and Dan Acquah scored the first two kicks for Kotoko as Douglas Nkrumah and Osei Kwame Jnr. saw their kicks saved while Port Authority score all of their our kicks.

Asante Kotoko were hopeful of advancing to the group stage of the vie for the title in the US$3.5 million competition.

Kotoko, twice winners of the club-competition now have only the domestic title to compete for as they seek to defend their league crown after their elimination from the continental campaign.

At the Len Clay stadium on Sunday, AshantiGold who managed an impressive 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea side, Renacimiento would be home after a decade's absence from the competition.

The Miners, 1997 silver medalist in the tournament are expected to complete the double over their opponents.

Officials of the club however say they are not getting carried away by their first leg win as they seek to avoid any complacency.
