Prior to the start of the World Cup, he was one of the much-criticized players called by Milovan Rajevac due to his lack of playing time at club level.
His abilities were further questioned following his performance in Ghana’s pre-World Cup friendly defeat to the Netherlands.
Now goalkeeper Richard Kingson has become one of the sterling performers and won over his critics following match-winning displays that helped Ghana to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
The Ghana goalkeeper, released from his contract by English side Wigan is not looking back at the past as he reveals how happy he is with his performances despite the Black Stars failing to reach his personal target, a semi-final place after losing out through the penalty shootout to Uruguay last Friday.
"I'm very happy with this tournament because my aim was to get to the semi-finals," he said.
"I'm a little bit down but I'm also happy for myself. There's nothing we can do now, we have to take it out of our minds and move forward. I'm very proud of the team, it's a young team and even in our country no one expected us to get to this stage."
For Kingson, who turned 32 on the day of Ghana’s opening game at the World Cup against Serbia, the tournament has only served as a platform for the next challenge.
"It was a big chance for me and it was very unfortunate but I'm so happy for myself, for my team-mates, my fans and the people who helped me to get to this stage.
“We have a young team, we have a good future and now we must get together to have a strong team for the next (African) Cup of Nations. We came very close but it was very unfortunate," Kingson said.
Ghana's loss would still be fresh in the minds of many following a late penalty miss by Asamoah Gyan in extra-time. But Kingson believes it's time to move on but says things should have been handled differently by the referee after Uruguay's Suarez handled a goal bound header.
"We were consoling him (in the dressing rooms), it's a game so we need to forget about it," he said before complaining about Suarez's actions.
"You can see from the beginning that it's unfair on our side, the referee should have allowed the goal but he gave a penalty. It's very unfortunate but it's also part of the game, you have to accept it and correct the mistake next time.
"Many things happen in football but you have to understand that little decisions can change every situation and that happened today. If the referee gives a goal we qualify for the semis, but he didn't, he gave a penalty."
