Ghana number one goalkeeper, Richard Kingson suffered a bad patch as his debut for Birmingham City only lasted for 40 minutes on Thursday in an English League Cup game away to Blackburn.

Kingson, making a rare start for Steve Bruce’s Blues and pulling some great saves got injured five minutes before half-time.

The Ghana goalkeeper tried to deal with a David Bentley free-kick but, under pressure from Christopher Samba, he smashed his head-first into a post.

Kingson gingerly got to his feet but collapsed and, after several minutes of treatment, he was stretchered off to be replaced by Colin Doyle.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution after the injury.

The Blues managed to keep a clean sheet but in the second half, Blackburn eased past Birmingham and into the Carling Cup fourth round with a 3-0 victory.

A rather below par performance by the Blues, Birmingham manager, Steve Bruce singled out Kingson as one of his two players who got some credit for a good job.

“I thought Kingson was excellent before he went down injured and he made two very good saves.”

Bruce would however not speculate on seriousness of the goalkeeper’s injury.

“It would be wrong for me to speculate yet.

“He got a nasty knock on his head, but we are not sure how serious it is yet.

“He’s in hospital at the moment which is the best place for him.”
