Asamoah Gyan is confident of overcoming the boos and jeers that greeted his substitution during Ghana’s second group game against Namibia in the African Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars had to grind out a 1-0 win over the Brave Warriors with Gyan’s strike partner Junior Agogo securing Ghana the match winner in the 40th minute after successive misses.

Gyan, who was taken off in the second half was whistled off the field by an expectant home crowd at the Ohene Djan Stadium last Thursday. But the 22 year-old striker is hopeful of staying strong in the face of criticisms over his performance ahead of the next game against Morocco.

“I may be down, but I am not out,” he told Kickoffghana.

“I know I have not had the best tournament but I also came to this competition after two months out injured so naturally I have not been at my best.”

Despite admitting a dip in form, he insists he does not deserve the recent attacks from the fans.

“I have been very sad since that game. When my number came up for substitution, some of the things that were said from the crowd broke my heart.

“I am 22 years old and in 26 internationals for Ghana I have scored 16 goals. If I was so bad, as has been suggested, I wouldn’t have stepped up for that penalty-kick against Guinea.

“I don’t know what the coach is thinking but if he plays me in the next game against Morocco, I should hopefully have a better game.”

Gyan is however courting the support of the fans ahead of the game against Morocco.

"We need your encouragement to make progress in the competition, and not the negative criticism."
