GPL WEEK 5 REVIEW: LEADERS MARCH ON, CHELSEA THUMP ASHANTIGOLD

Leaders Aduana Stars and Kumasi Asante Kotoko won to stretch their unbeaten run in the league, while Berekum Chelsea thrashed Ashantigold in week 5 of the Ghana Premier League, which was characterized by late drama.

The match of the week was in Dormaa Ahenkro where leaders, Aduana Stars welcomed Accra Hearts of Oak. But what was expected to be an uncompromising encounter for two unbeaten sides in the league turned out to be an easy ride for Aduana, who brushed aside the Phobians  with a 2:0 win. 

Daniel Darkwa opened the scoring for Aduana in the 7th minute, and by the 17th minute, Derrick Sasraku doubled the lead to take the match beyond the Phobians, who tasted their first defeat of the season and slipped down from 3rd.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko, who are tied on points with Aduana Stars, needed to win against Elmina Sharks in Kumasi to keep pace with their early title rivals. Sharks were resolute for and looked to be cruising to a remarkable draw, which would have also extended their unbeaten away record so far in the league. 

But there was a late drama, as Emmanuel Gyamfi scored in injury time to hand Kotoko their third successive home win of the season in as many matches.

In Wa, another late goal saved Wa All Stars from what would have been a disappointing home draw against Inter Allies.  An injury to All Stars' Kwaku Asuandzie, which resulted to a lengthy treatment on the pitch, necessitated 8 minutes of added time after 90 minutes of play. 

It was was within the injury time that All Stars won a penalty which Wahidu Mumuni converted to give the defending champions their first win of the season.

In Berekum, Chelsea went on a rampage, thrashing Ashantigold 5:1, with Stephen Sarfo scoring a brace. Sarfo opened the scoring in the 28th minute and Seth Appiah doubled it through a penalty in the 38th minute. In the second half, Briamah Mohammed scored in the 48th minute before Kofi Owusu got a consolation goal for Ashantigold in the 51st minute. 

Stephen Amankonah scored the 4th in the in the 58th minute and Stephen Sarfo completed he rout in the 69th minute.

Bechem United defeated Liberty Professionals 1:0, with Mohammed Hamza scoring the only goal in the 74th minute.

Great Olympics are still without a win after drawing 0:0 with WAFA at the Accra Sports Stadium.

On Saturday, Tema Youth kicked off week 5 with a 2:0 win over Bolga All Stars in Tema, with Michael Kporvi scoring a brace to give Tema Youth all the three points.

On Monday, Ebusua Dwarfs will host Medeama in Cape Coast in the final match of week 5.
