Government will give Christian Atsu befitting burial – Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif

Youth and Sports Minister Ussif Mustapha has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the football community and family of Christian Atsu Twasam.

The Yagaba-Kubori Member of Parliament met officials of the Ghana Football Association and the Twasam family on Friday to deliberate on issues relating to the final funeral rites and burial of the late international footballer.

The Honourable Minister assured the family that His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic has a keen interest to ensure a befitting burial for the former Black Stars forward.

Hon. Mustapha mentioned that H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic was very much interested and instrumental in getting the body of Christian Atsu flown to Ghana for a befitting burial.

He expressed his condolences to the family and the Ghana Football Association for the tragic loss of the player and noted that it was important for the family to have an opportunity to work with the state to give the player a befitting state funeral.

Nene Gabriel Kofi Tswasam III expressed his appreciation to the Minister and mentioned that it was a tragic moment for all Ghanaians and the football family across the World.

The family and officials of the Ghana Football Association are scheduled for another meeting with H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo President of the Republic on Monday, February 27, 2023 to agree on a suitable date for the burial.

The Twasam family was led by Nene Kwame Twasam III. Executive Council Member Nana Sarfo Oduro led the team from the Ghana Football Association - they included Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante and Director of Communications Henry Asante Twum.

Christian Atsu died on Saturday, February 18, 2023 after his body was found in the rubble of a collapsed building following a devastating earthquake that hit some parts of Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, 2023.

The former Chelsea, Everton, and Newcastle United player made 65 appearances and scored 9 goals for the Black Stars in an International career that spanned seven years.

The one week observation will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
