Ghana kept their FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualification hopes on course with a 4-0 win over Zambia on Sunday as the Black Maidens close-in on one of the slots for this year’s competition.
The Black Maidens thus complete a 6-0 aggregate scoreline over their opponents after recording a 2-0 win a fortnight ago in Lusaka.
Ghana would now meet Congo DR in the next round during the weekend of April 2-4 and play the return leg two weeks later.
Congo got a bye following the withdrawal of Zimbabwe. And the winner over the two-leg tie would pick one of the three places available for grabs on the African continent for the World Cup to be hosted by New Zealand from October 28 to November 16, 2008.
The Black Maidens playing at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra with a half-filled crowd cheering them on scored two goals apiece in each half to seal victory.
Ghana started the rout just two minutes into the start of the game when Elizabeth Cudjoe put the Black Maidens in the lead.
Deborah Afriyie doubled the lead for the Black Maidens scoring the second in the 21st minute as Ghana ended the first half two goals up.
Back from the interval, it took the Black Maidens some 32 minute of play time to put the game beyond their opponents as Elizabeth Addo struck the third goal in the 77th minute before Mary Essiful finished off Ghana’s scoring run when she scored the fourth goal in the 89th minute.
The journey to New Zealand for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup from the African continent has now been narrowed to six teams in search of three qualifying places for the debut Under-17 World Cup tournament.
