Footballer arrested in Berekum for assaulting a referee

A footballer, Joseph Adjei Oteng has been arrested by the Berekum Divisional Police Command for assaulting an Assistant Referee during a Regional Division Two League match between Domfete Galaxy FC and Fetentaa Gye Nyame FC played on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. The accused is currently in custody ready to be processed to court.

Aside the criminal prosecution, the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association has also activated disciplinary procedures leading to sporting sanctions as the suspect has been charged for misconduct.

The suspect is alleged to have assaulted Assistant Referee II Patrick Adjei Sarpong in a Regional Division Two League match between Domfete Galaxy FC and Fetentaa Gye Nyame FC played on Wednesday.

According to the match report and other sources of evidence gathered, the player Joseph Oteng Adjei, without any provocation rushed to the Assistant referee immediately after the final whistle and struck him multiple times with a pair of football boots.

While the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association and Ghana Football Association have activated disciplinary procedures leading to Sporting sanctions, the Berekum Divisional Police Command, with the support of the Ghana Football Association is vigorously pursuing the criminal aspect of the case.

The match ended 1-0 in favour of Gye Nyame FC.
