It is the beginning of what many hope can one day rival the male game as Ghana readies to kick off its maiden National Women's League.

Twelve clubs, grouped into two sectors of six each will make history when they start the inaugural league this weekend across the country.

The season starts with much expectation as the quest for Championship status and the battle to avoid the drop serves as a perfect reminder about how valuable every point earned or dropped will be come the end of the campaign.

The Northern Sector league kicks off with veteran women's football campaigners Fabulous Ladies and Ashtown Ladies both playing away on the opening day.

Fabulous Ladies, who won last year's National Women’s Championship travel to the Tamale Stadium Annex to face Lepo Ladies while the women from Ashtown will be away in Techiman against Ampem Darkoa Ladies.

Prison's Ladies wrap up the first day matches in the Northern division at the Bolga Stadium when they meet Bolga Ghatel Ladies.

A tough contest is expected in the Southern division where Soccer Intellectuals face Cape Coast Ghatel at the Robert Mensah Stadium.

Hasaacas Ladies take on Ayoola Ladies at the Gyandu Park while Immigration Ladies battle Volta Amalgamated Ladies at the Legon Park.

According to the WLB, leaders from both zones will play a one-off match and the winner will be declared champion.

The team that finishes bottom in either of the two sectors after the season will be automatically relegated while the second from bottom sides will compete in a one-off fixture to determine which side joins the two other relegated sides.
