In a revealing and wide-ranging conversation on the GFA Podcast, the Director of Information Technology and a Deputy General Secretary at the Football Association, Francis Essah Adu, offered a compelling insight into the technological evolution shaping modern football administration in Ghana.

Speaking with Patrick Akoto, Adu reflected on a remarkable 25-year journey at the FA - one defined by innovation, resilience and a relentless push to modernize systems that once relied heavily on manual processes.

From Paper to a Global Digital Ecosystem

Adu traced the transformation of player registration from its rudimentary beginnings to a sophisticated, globally connected system. When he joined the GFA in 2001, the process was entirely paper-based, with multiple copies of documents manually stored and distributed.

That landscape has since been revolutionized. Through strategic collaboration with FIFA, the FA transitioned to a centralized digital platform, eventually integrating into the globally recognized FIFA Connect system. Today, player data is instantly accessible across FIFA-affiliated federations worldwide - dramatically improving efficiency, transparency and compliance.

“This system allows real-time access and validation. A player registered today becomes immediately eligible and visible within the global football ecosystem.” Adu explained.

Driving efficiency through 24-Hour Operations

Central to this transformation is the adoption of a 24-hour operational model within the IT department. With over 60,000 players registered annually, Adu noted that the shift was both strategic and necessary.

By restructuring staff schedules to align with Ghana’s broader 24-hour economy vision, the FA has significantly reduced delays and eliminated backlogs in player registration.

“The goal was simple - improve service delivery to clubs across the country. And the results have been immediate and impactful." he said.

Tackling Fraud and protecting Players

The Director of IT also sounded a strong warning about the menace of unlicensed agents and self-styled “player managers.” He emphasized that only individuals who meet FIFA’s licensing requirements are recognized, cautioning players and clubs against engaging unauthorized intermediaries.

Such practices, he noted, expose players to exploitation, poor contracts and long-term career damage.

“Players must educate themselves, seek proper advice, and fully understand the agreements they enter into.” he stressed.

Competition Management System

At the heart of the GFA’s digital push is the Competition Management System (CMS), a powerful platform streamlining matchday operations and data tracking. The system allows clubs, referees, and match officials to perform their duties remotely, with real-time updates feeding directly into the FA’s ecosystem.

Adu revealed ambitious plans to extend the CMS to the grassroots level, enabling comprehensive data capture across all tiers - from juvenile leagues to the Premier League.

“Imagine a system where, with a single click, you can access the total number of matches, goals and disciplinary records across the country. That is the future we are building." he said.

Double Registration and Identity Manipulation

Despite these advances, Francis Adu acknowledged challenges - chief among them, the issue of double registration. Weaknesses in national documentation systems and the absence of biometric verification tools, such as facial recognition, create loopholes that some individuals exploit.

“In IT, no system is perfect. We continue to improve, but identity manipulation remains a real concern,” he admitted, noting that altered documents and image manipulation complicate detection efforts.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the current digital framework is far superior to the old paper-based system, offering greater traceability and control.

Vision for the Future

With a quarter-century of experience, Francis Essah Adu stands as a central figure in Ghana football’s administrative transformation. His vision is clear: a fully digitized, efficient and transparent football ecosystem powered by innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.

From grassroots development to elite competition management, the GFA’s IT infrastructure is evolving rapidly - positioning Ghana as a forward-thinking force in football administration.
