Colts club coaches in the Ashanti and the Greater Accra Regions received safeguarding training during their Free License D Coaching Course held in the two regions.

During the session, led by GFA Safeguarding Officer, Obed Tuffour, coaches were equipped with practical tools to protect young players from harm and exploitation.

Emphasis was placed on building boundaries between adults and children, creating safe environments, and recognising early warning signs of abuse.

Coaches were also introduced to reporting mechanisms that allow concerns to be raised swiftly and responsibly.

Participants welcomed the training as necessary, given the unique challenges faced by grassroots football in the capital, Accra. Many promised to carry the lessons to their clubs and districts, helping to build a culture of safety across the Accra.

In Kumasi, the session highlighted the coach’s duty of care and responsibility to act as role models for young players. Coaches were guided on recognising and addressing risks such as abuse, exploitation, and trafficking—issues that remain a serious concern in football. Interactive discussions also tackled the pressures of match-fixing and the importance of upholding integrity on and off the field.

The training was marked by engagement from the participants, many of whom reflected on their personal experiences and the challenges faced in their communities when dealing with young players. Coaches recognised the importance of protecting players from harm and abuse in order to create a safe and supportive environment that nurtures their development and strengthens their budding football careers.
