Eric Addo is backing Ghana to come good when the African Cup of Nations begins in Angola next weekend despite some worrying injury cases.

The Black Stars have been hindered by injuries as two key personnel have been forced to withdraw from the squad.

John Mensah became the latest player to join the list of absentees after John Paintsil had withdrawn in midweek. Stephen Appiah and Laryea Kingston were both out injured before the Black Stars squad was announced.

Previous Nations Cup campaigns have been preceded by such disturbing matters with results not any better but Addo, one of the experienced members in the squad believes Ghana will do better than the 2006 competition when the squad lost Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan to last-minute injuries.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has included in his squad eight members of the of FIFA Under-20 World Cup winning team and that gives Addo the belief that Ghana has enough quality in the present squad to do better than they did then.

“You can see the coach has brought in talented youngsters who have shown great quality already, so while it’s unfortunate that injuries have come, we have to concentrate on what we have.

“Injuries are part of football and when it comes you have to deal with it. Thankfully there are a lot of good players who have come in.”

Though the youngsters will be making their Nations Cup debuts, Addo considers the guidance and experience of players like himself as vital.

“It will take collective effort but sometimes when you have been there before you can offer a few tips. We don't feel our chances of doing well in Angola have diminished and that is the most important thing.”
