Our union has proven to be the strongest in Africa and that can been seen in our performance in continental competitions. The winner of the last AFCON, Côte D'Ivoire is a member of our Union and the losing finalists, Ghana is also from our zone".

"I also wish to congratulate Nigeria for winning the Under 17 World Cup last year and for emerging as winners of the Under 23 tournament",Mr. Nyantakyi stated in his opening remarks.

Last year we intended to organize a U-17 tournament in Burkina Faso, unfortunately a week to the tournament there was a coup d'etat there so we called off the tournament. Burkina Faso has however expressed its readiness to host the competition this year which will be telecasted by Supersports".

Our zone has seen some challenges in Togo and Benin where there are currently normalization committees. We are hoping that very soon the issues will be resolved".

" We acknowledge that football is currently going through some global challenges and it's our hope that with the reforms in Fifa we will grow from strength to strength",Mr. Nyantakyi who is also the GHana FA President added.

Mr. Nyantakyi informed delegates at the Congress that three FIFA Presidential aspirants, HRH Prince Ali Al Hussein , Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Gianni Infantino , have requested to be given the opportunity to lobby WAFU delegates at the congress ahead of next month's elections.

" I urge members to evaluate what they tell us and remember that the interest of African football will be paramount in deciding who Africa votes for", the WAFU President reiterated.

The one-day congress will be climaxed with the election of the president of the Union for the 2016-2020 term.
