Black Starlets assistant coach Mohammed Hamza insists Ghana remain focused on securing qualification to the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship ahead of their crucial Group A encounter against Benin on Tuesday.
The two sides will lock horns in their second group game at the Stade Du 4 Aout in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, with Ghana looking to build on their opening-day victory over Togo and secure a place in the last four of the competition.
The Black Starlets have three points from their 1-0 win over Togo, while Benin have one point following their opening-day goalless draw against hosts Burkina Faso.
Despite acknowledging the quality of their opponents, Hamza says Ghana are determined to secure the result needed to advance to the semi-finals.
“We know they will come hard but we are focused on securing qualification to the semi-final. Benin have a very good team, we respect them but we know who we are and what we want. To be the best, you have to beat the best,” Mohammed said.
The assistant coach stressed that the team is approaching the tournament one game at a time, insisting that their attention is now firmly on Benin after putting their opening victory behind them.
“We are taking it one game at a time. We are done with Togo and it's Benin tomorrow. Getting to the semis depend on that game and we are going all out for it,” he added.
A victory on Tuesday will guarantee Ghana automatic qualification to the semi-finals, making the encounter a significant test for the young side as they seek to maintain their winning momentum and progress in the competition.
The Black Starlets will therefore be aiming for another strong performance against Benin as they continue their campaign at the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship, which serves as a qualifying competition for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
