Midfielder Abdul Latif Wunzalgu has been named Man of the Match following the Black Starlets’ 1-0 victory over Togo in their opening game at the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The playmaker delivered an impressive performance on Saturday at the August 4 Sports Stadium, playing a key role in Ghana’s attacking play as the team secured all three points to begin their campaign on a positive note.
Wunzalgu was instrumental in the build-up to Ghana’s winning goal, scored by David Kwarteng in the seventh minute. His well-rehearsed free-kick routine was initially blocked before captain Abdul Rafiu Issah followed up with an attempt that eventually fell to Kwarteng, who finished to give Ghana the lead.
The midfielder’s creativity and contribution to the team’s attacking play helped the Black Starlets maintain pressure on their opponents as they searched for a second goal. Despite creating several opportunities, Ghana were unable to add to their early advantage but held on to claim a deserved victory.
The win puts Ghana at the top of Group A with three points, following a goalless draw between hosts Burkina Faso and Benin in the other opening-day fixture.
Wunzalgu’s individual recognition provides an additional boost for the young Ghanaian side as they turn their attention to Tuesday’s Group A encounter against Benin, where they will aim to build on their winning start and strengthen their push for qualification for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
