The University for Development Studies (UDS) has paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following their recent triumph at the Africa University Games and in preparation for the upcoming World University Games in China. UDS made history by defeating Lagos State University 3-0 in the final to clinch the continental title and will now represent Africa on the global stage this September.
The high-powered UDS delegation was led by Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Elliot Haruna Alhassan, and included their Deputy Director of Finance, Dr. Alhassan Iddrissu, Head of Registry, Mr. Yussif Abdulai, Director of Sports, Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, Head of the Accra Office, Mr. Ansa Michael and Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Abdul Hayi Moomen.
Their visit to the GFA was to formally inform the association of their continental feat and to seek support as they prepare for the global tournament in China.
The delegation was warmly received by GFA Vice President, Mark Addo, who stood in for the President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku. During the meeting, Prof. Alhassan expressed UDS's pride in flying Ghana’s flag high and appealed to the GFA to support their preparations for the World University Games.
“We are here to officially inform the Ghana Football Association of our recent success on the African stage and to request your support as we prepare for the World University Games,” said Prof. Alhassan. “This is a proud moment for our university and for Ghana. We want to make the nation proud in China, and we need your help to make that possible,” Professor Elliot Haruna Alhassan noted.
In his remarks, Mark Addo congratulated UDS for their historic victory and expressed the Association’s admiration for the quality of talent and discipline exhibited by the team. He emphasized the GFA’s commitment to supporting academic institutions that contribute to football development and assured UDS of the Association’s support.
“On behalf of the GFA President and the entire football family, I want to congratulate UDS for making Ghana proud. Your victory is a testament to what our youth can achieve through dedication and teamwork,” he said.
Mr. Addo further assured the delegation of the GFA’s readiness to support their journey. “The Ghana Football Association stands with you. We will do our part to ensure that you are well prepared and supported as you go to represent Ghana and Africa on the world stage.”
He further urged the team to remain focused, train diligently, and aim to make Ghana and Africa proud at the World University Games. The meeting symbolized a significant collaboration between academia and national football leadership towards uplifting Ghana's image through sports.
UDS’s qualification and upcoming participation in China not only mark a major milestone in Ghana’s university sports history but also present an opportunity for the country to shine on a global sporting platform.
