Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has emphasised that his provisional team selection was arrived at after a critical observation.

The Black Stars will be gathering in France beginning May 24 with a 30-man squad which will be pruned to 23 by the June 1 deadline for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Prior to his squad announcement and after, lots of commentary has been focused on Rajevac’s call ups with emphasis on the justification of certain players.

One of such call ups is Stephen Appiah. A player who captained at its debut four years ago has undergone a rather torrid time, having sat out during the last two years due to injury and contractual problems.

Now on the cards of Bologna in the Italian Serie A and having made a couple of competitive appearances so far with both games coming in the end of season run-in, Rajevac admits that Appiah’s situation has greatly improved as compared to the past years.

“He is a big personality whose leadership is important,” Rajevac said to www.ghanafa.org.

“Appiah now has a club where he’s played in some matches, training matches, for the reserves and is doing everything that other players are doing. It’s just that he hasn’t played much competitive games.”

For the Ghana coach, Appiah possess everything just like every other player to be there.

“It depends on himself. Once he’s fully fit then he can be there [World Cup].

“But I must say, Appiah’s condition now is better than before.”

Rajevac also delved into what his team were looking for before settling on the Ghana squad.

“Every player was observed and we made a critical observation over a period of time and arrived at a decision that we believe is in the best interest of Ghana.

“There are a lot of Ghanaian players but the coach wants to win just as Ghanaians want to win. This is what we believe is good for us.”

Achieving results is most central to Rajevac’s plans and he explains that at such a big stage, experience will be crucial for Ghana.

“This is the World Cup, the biggest football tournament in the world where the best players gather. Experience will matter at the World Cup so I will have that in my mind.

“Some players have big reputation and are well experienced. You can trust such players because you have worked with them over and over. You the abilities of such players and you know what they bring to the team and in the dressing room,” Rajevac said.
