Ghana are seeking to open their African Women’s Championship with a win against Nigeria on Sunday and make a statement for the Championship title.
The second day of the tournament which got underway yesterday would see the Black Queens play the Super Falcons in Group B in Bata while South Africa take on debutants, Tunisia in the other group match.
Ghana faces an uphill task of they play five-time champions, Nigeria, who have emerged winners in all previous editions spanning a 10-year period.
Despite their dominance, the Black Queens are hopeful of ending Nigeria's impressive run.
Irrespective of the threat posed by the Black Queens, who have beaten their opponents once in this competition coming some six years ago, Nigeria would hope to begin their defence on a good note.
Ghana coach, Mumuni Gamel is confident his side are up to the task and will deliver.
“We have prepared very well for the tournament, and we are ready for any form of opposition. The Falcons are favourites, but an upset is not above us,” coach of the Black Queens said.
Black Queens captain, Adjoa Bayor, who is making a sixth Championship appearance, is optimistic that Ghana can deny the usual suspects, Nigeria, another championship this time round.
“We’ve always played second-fiddle to them (Nigeria) but as we start off the competition against the Falcons, we are very confident that we can end their dominance this year.
“The side has been improving and every time we have gotten closer. I believe we can make it this time,” Bayor says.
The 6th African Women’s Championship which kicked-off on Saturday features eight female teams on the continent namely holders Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon, Mali, Congo, Tunisia and hosts Equatorial Guinea.
