Ghana will carry the hopes of Africa when the Black Stars take on the United States in the round of 16 match at the World Cup on Saturday.

A combination of poor results by the continent’s other sides have contrived to leave Ghana as the lone African team to reach the knockout stage.

The Black Stars is in the World Cup for only the second time and on their debut in 2006, they beat the United States 2-1 in the final group stage match.

On Saturday, it would be a meeting of a familiar opponents but Ghana’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, playing in his debut World Cup says the Black Stars are not only playing for a country, rather they are carrying the hopes of an entire continent.

"Now we're playing for all Africa. Ghana is the standard-bearer for the whole continent. The African fans will be behind us as we do everything we can to reach the quarter-finals," the Ghana midfielder said.

For U.S coach Bob Bradley, it would be a tough encounter describing the Ghana team as a “talented team, athletic team, mobile, we all know the types of players Ghana has produced, great youth teams they’ve had and done a great job of turning into very good teams at the full national team level.”

Landon Donovan who scored in second-half stoppage time for the Americans to defeat Algeria 1-0 on Wednesday, a result which earned the US their first win says they have an opportunity to achieve something against Ghana.

“It’s not a failure if we don’t win Saturday, but there’s such a massive opportunity to do something so much more special,” Donovan said.

“And I really want to emphasize that to everybody, and make sure we understand that.”

The winner will face Uruguay or South Korea in the quarter-finals.
