Eastern Region etched their name into the history books after overcoming Brong Ahafo 4–2 on penalties to clinch the maiden MTN Elite U19 Championship at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Sunday.
In a tense and dramatic final, Eastern Region defied two missed penalties during regulation time to emerge victorious after a goalless draw.
Midfielder Desmond Tutu, who endured a frustrating evening by missing a penalty in each half, was spared blushes as his teammates held their nerve during the shootout to secure a memorable triumph.
Coach Kelvin Agyemang Tuffuor’s side displayed impressive composure under pressure, converting four of their five spot-kicks while their goalkeeper stood tall to deny Brong Ahafo twice, sealing a 4–2 victory and sparking jubilant celebrations.
The win capped off a remarkable campaign for Eastern Region, who had earlier topped their group and showed consistency and tactical maturity throughout the tournament. Despite their profligacy in front of goal during the final, they demonstrated resilience and character to lift the prestigious trophy.
The 11-day tournament, which concluded on Sunday, delivered exciting football and showcased exceptional talent from across the country, reaffirming the strength of Ghana’s grassroots football structure.
Greater Accra’s Yussif Saani emerged as one of the standout performers of the competition, sweeping two top individual honours — Most Valuable Player and Goal King after netting five goals in six matches. Eastern Region’s Ishmael Azagonor was named Best Goalkeeper, while his teammate Prince Boakye received the Most Promising Player award.
