Brong Ahafo Region produced a commanding performance to defeat Western Region 4–1 in their final Group A fixture of the MTN Elite U19 Championship on Wednesday morning at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The impressive victory puts Brong Ahafo firmly in contention for a place in the semi-finals, pending the outcome of the remaining group matches.
It was Western Region who struck first, with Ahmed Yankey opening the scoring in the 4th minute after a brilliant solo run and clinical finish. Brong Ahafo responded strongly and restored parity through Dankwah Bismark in the 22nd minute, setting the stage for an entertaining contest.
After the break, Gideon Otabil, the skillful left-footer who later deservedly earned the Player of the Match award, put Brong Ahafo ahead in the 57th minute with a sublime finish.
The momentum continued as Mohammed Hafiz extended the lead ten minutes later, making it 3–1. Western Region’s misfortune deepened in the later stages when Lord Quansah inadvertently turned the ball into his own net following a dangerous cross from Otabil, sealing a comprehensive win for Brong Ahafo.
The result lifts Brong Ahafo to nine points from four matches, placing them level with Eastern Region at the top of Group A, though their qualification to the semi-finals will depend on the final round of group fixtures. Northern Region, who have six points with a game in hand—will face off in a decisive encounter that will determine the two teams advancing from the group.
Meanwhile, in Group B, Central Region are set to face Upper East in their final group match, while Greater Accra and Ashanti Region remain in pole position to qualify for the knockout stage following their strong campaigns so far.
