Miners secure second round place

AshantiGold beat Renacimiento of Equatorial Guinea 1-0 to qualify for the second round of the CAF/MTN Champions League on Sunday.

The result at the Len Clay stadium made it 2-0 on aggregate for the Miners after having won the first leg 1-0 in Malabo courtesy a strike from defender Jonathan Quartey.

The only goal of the game came from Alfred Arthur after 26 minutes of play in the first half.

Arthur struggled to connect a cross from captain, Abdul Lamine Nasir as he had see two attempts at goal blocked by the goalkeeper in a spate of a few seconds before finally poking home the match winner.

The Miners, silver medalist in the 1997 competition now advance to the second round of the competition where they play FAR Rabat of Morocco next month.

Earlier on Saturday, Asante Kotoko failed to make it to the next stage of the CAF/MTN Champions League after losing away on penalties to Gambian side, Port Authority in Banjul on Saturday.

The Porcupine Warriors lost 4-2 during spot kicks after the Gambians had forced the game into penalties with a vital goal 14 minutes to the end of the game that canceled out Kotoko’s 1-0 lead from the first leg.

Kotoko held their opponents for a greater part of the game and appeared to be coasting to qualification from the first leg tie goal by defender, Dan Acquah through a spot kick.

However, Port Authority snatched the much needed equalizer after a misunderstanding between Kotoko goalkeeper Isaac Amoako and defender Dan Acquah allowed a Gambian player to slot the ball into the post.

And during the spot kicks, Michael Ofosu-Appiah and Dan Acquah scored the first two kicks for Kotoko as Douglas Nkrumah and Osei Kwame Jnr. saw their kicks saved while Port Authority score all of their our kicks.

Asante Kotoko were hopeful of advancing to the group stage of the vie for the title in the US$3.5 million competition.

Kotoko, twice winners of the club-competition now have only the domestic title to compete for as they seek to defend their league crown after their elimination from the continental campaign.
