John Mensah has backed Ghana to emerge from the World Cup with something to cheer about.

The defender who played in his debut four years ago when Germany hosted the competition as Ghana went on to become the best African star at the competition, reaching the second round.

Two days before their opening Group D game against Serbia in Pretoria and Mensah is convinced that the time has arrived for the Black Stars to achieve something great.

Attaining such high standards for Mensah would be fuelled by the experience picked up by Ghana from the 2006 competition.

"The experience [of Germany 2006] helped us reach this place," said Mensah.

"And I think our experience is going to help us to move higher than where we reached in 2006 … I believe this time we are determined, and we believe that we are going to achieve important things in this World Cup."
