Ghana certainly deserved the opening win at the 2008 African Cup of Nations after posting a 2-1 win over Guinea at the Ohene Djan Stadium on Sunday.

The opening half of the game saw Ghana miss target with three goal attempts coming off the post against a Guinean side who hardly threatened the Black Stars' defence.

And the second half was no different as efforts at goal came the Black Stars’ way until Asamoah Gyan scored the opener from a spot kick in the 51st minute to put Ghana in the lead.

The Syli Nationale cancelled out the lead in the 63rd minute before a wonderful shot hit past the diving Guinean goalkeeper by Sulley Muntari in the 89th minute handed Ghana victory.

Claude Le Roy was left ruing the missed opportunities as Ghana left it late.

"We created so many opportunities to score, scoring seems to be very complicated for us," he said.

"But it was a very good performance by the Black Stars. "We were also unlucky in the first half when we hit the post three times.

"We know that the future will be very difficult because all the teams in this competition are very good teams."

Le Roy's opposite number, Robert Nouzaret was left counting the cost as Guinea's pre-game talk of a semi-final berth starts on a wrong footing.

"We know that the future will be very difficult because all the teams in this competition are very good teams."

"This is the worst match Guinea have played under me," he said. "My regret is that we didn't play the way we should have."

"The next game will be decisive for us," said Nouzaret, whose side face Morocco on Thursday.

"The consequence of losing the first game is that if we lose the second, we're out."

Ghana's next game is against Namibia on Thursday at the Ohene Djan Stadium.
