A late goal by Eric Bekoe saved Asante Kotoko’s blushes in the Confederation Cup group stage as the Porcupine Warriors beat Sudan’s El-Merreikh at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The 1-0 win helps Kotoko, who now have three points; maintain their push for a semi-final place after 2-0 defeat in their opening group game against Etoile du Sahel had cast a doubt about their title aspirations.

Kotoko could have sealed the game within the first half but poor finishing denied them a goal as they had to endure some agonising wait for the opener in the 86th minute through Bekoe who had early missed some chances.

Bekoe connected home a pass from substitute Kwadwo Poku to give Kotoko a deserved victory that came too late in the game.

Victory did not come easy as El-Merreikh had a goal attempt cleared off the line by Michael Ofosu Appiah before seeing another effort hit the bar.

Kotoko are now level on points with the other three sides in the group.
