Just how far can Ghana go with the Wafu Cup experience?

High up on the agenda during the planning process for the GoTV Wafu Cup was to offer domestic talents a platform to horne their skills and ready the sides from the sub-region for next year's African Nations Championship.

No one quite knew the level of expectation would be for teams to first win the Wafu Cup before looking ahead.

At least, that is the story now as the level of competition has somehow pushed the success buttons a little bit than the bigger picture of football development.

Only two - hosts Ghana and Burkina Faso - of the eight teams participating at the competition will be taking part in the 16-nation CHAN finals in South Africa from January 11 to February 1, 2014.

After an exciting 4-1 victory over Sierra Leone to start to the competition, the weekend results in the competition presented us with perhaps an indication that Ghana were not going to make the finals following their 1-0 defeat to Benin.

However, after the last Group A matches on Monday, the hosts bounced back to sail through defeating Burkina Faso 2-1 to finish on six points, one better than Benin, who came in second and will compete for third-place.

Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone are out of contention for honours.

Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu has certainly picked up valuable lessons along the journey to the final, demanding his players improve their tactical discipline.

"We have to work on our boys, physically and mentally. We have to psyche them very well," the Ghana coach said.

"Some have been in this situation for quite too long a time and at this level you can't just take the laws into your hands. We have to psyche them and make sure it doesn't happen again."

After a final meeting against the winner of Group B - either Senegal or defending champions Togo - on Thursday in Kumasi, Konadu will know just how well the lessons will stand his team in the future.

"This is a preparatory tournament for us. The bigger picture is the one [CHAN] in South Africa," he said.
