The Premier League Board says it would implement the Executive Committee’s decision to use the head-head rule to apply in both the title decider and relegation battles in the event of a tie of points.

With the adoption of the rule, Article 8.5 of the regulations, some uniformity would be brought in place when deciding the placings.

Article 8.5 reads:

"The Club which has scored the highest number of points at the end of the league or other competition(s) of the Football Association shall be declared the champion. If two or more teams obtain the same number of points at the end of the competition, their ranking shall be determined as follows and in the stated order:

(a) Greater number of points obtained in matches between the clubs concerned during the competition. (b) Goal difference resulting from the match(es) between the teams concerned. (c) Greater number of goals scored in the match(es) between the teams concerned. (d) Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams concerned.

"In the event there is still a tie after the application of all the above, the FA shall organize a play-off between and / or amongst the teams concerned at a neutral ground."

The introduction of the rule was adopted at Congress before the start of the season but a subsequent meeting by the Executive Committee this week has stated that the rule will be determine all sixteen places in the premier League.
